When I Dream

By Sand Pilarski

When I dream of grass, it's always green
The green of spring, glowing with life,
Soft to walk on, comforting to feet.
The green of a summer lawn in gentle sun
And it stretches on forever.

When I dream of my kitchen, it's always clean
The counters cleared, the dishes stacked.
My mother's mixing bowl stands
By a wooden spoon that waits expectantly
For batter to be mixed.

When I dream of water it's always blue
Turquoise, like a swimming pool,
Never too cold to plunge in deeply,
Lifting me as I swim with effortless strokes
Even when the waves are high.

And then there are comforting arms
That hold me gently, warmly
With a tenderness that makes my heart soar
And waking unwelcome.
When I dream of love, it's always you.
