No Tracks

By Sand Pilarski

She was waiting for a taxi in the rain
He unfurled his umbrella to cover them both,
Saying "Are you waiting for the train?"

She was considering calling 9-1-1
He asked if she'd had a pleasant day in spite of weather.
She told him she was glad her day was done.

"There is no train that comes here, you know,"
she said, and then gaped at the roaring vehicle
that pulled up by the curb. Her mouth framed, "Oh, no."

He mounted the stairs, then, saying and waving goodbye,
and disappeared without another word.
She blinked when a drop -- was it rain? -- filled her eye.

She considered that what had transpired was a trick of the brain
While headlights veered past her in the speckled night.
And waiting for a revelation, she stood there in the rain.
