Before You Came

By Geosi Gyasi

Before you came
From the openings
Of my womb,
I was contemplating
Over you,
Even before your father
Fled away,
Until this flash of light
Broke into my windows
A swash sound of warning
Saying never to destroy you.
Today, jobless at thirty-five,
You stand by my door
With a gun at my throat
And call me a witch!
Oh God! Why did I let you live?
