Reflections from the Newsreel 03: Everyday Ordinary

Reflections on the Newsreel 03: Everyday Ordinary

The weekend boils over,
a kettle left unchecked.
Violence disturbs society,
exceptional in its cruelty.
How did we get here?
We ask ourselves with TV on.
Is this the world we dreamed,
the one we see on sitcoms?
9 men found beheaded,
trussed like cows to slaughter.
Extraordinary, severe,
once newsworthy, now ordinary.
Just another day at the office.
How do we not react
when terror is commonplace?
Where are the protests,
the just reckoning?
Or are we all too tired
of seeing monsters each day?
No more night lights,
to somehow keep them at bay.
Now we leave the door open,
invite them to hide under our beds.
So desensitized to sadism,
our outrage is on vacation
only to return in fragments
when Starbucks spells our name wrong.
What world is this, I ask?
As I watch my sons play.
Let them be the better men,
who fought the good fight
all the live long day.
