When an Accent Becomes an Issue

By Ahmad Al-Khatat

When an Accent Becomes an Issue

"Go home and write an assignment."
She said it after she felt hopeless to
-- understand how the beginner student
describe his nostalgia to his native land
His beliefs were left behind his father's ashes
He then asks if he will be obliged to write the
ideas of one colour man-made, since his race
does not have a voice or a civil place in society
He sings at the karaoke of Michael Jackson songs
Someone shouts at him "Only English, please."
He talks about his amazing culture and beliefs
Someone yells at him "Face the consequences ..."
He sadly died and his death makes me cry, cry,
and cry until my eyes literally dry up, with his tears
in his coffin, I have completed his heartbreaking
assignment and the teacher said "it is his accent ..."
