The Art Class

By Rp Verlaine

The Art Class

Seldom enough air
in the room
once she enters.

With no expression
she dares us to
create one

Yet smiles
when I say it's not just
her makeup that's flawless.

As we amateurs
with varying success
draw her in class.

I drive her home
after teacher mentions
she lives closest to me.

We stop for drinks
the more alcohol she consumes
the sadder her stories.

"Nice kiss," she says
outside her front door
I have no key to.

Thoughts of her
follow me home
forget to knock.

The wide emptiness
my heart's long held onto
gets notice to leave.
