The Melody of a Waterfall

By Dharmpal Mahendra Jain

The Melody of a Waterfall

We heard a melody at Bhedaghat*,
that was softly hummed.
The notes we heard at Niagara Falls were similar,
though the sound of the rushing water was much louder.
The cascading waterfall,
with its many strings and currents,
playfully teases the sharp rocks below.
The melody is so familiar and soothing
when nature sings uninterrupted.

As tourists, we get lost
in the mesmerizing stream
of the waterfall.
No one is looking for a language, caste or race.
When nature sings in harmony,
who remembers their country or province?
There are no discordant notes
in this melody.

No one is measuring the angle of the sun
as we witness the rainbow
created by the scattered rays.
Our eyes feast on the seven colors,
without discrimination.
Our ears listen to the music,
and our hearts, leaping and bounding,
travel beyond the seven seas to Bhedaghat.

As nature sings uninterrupted,
we immerse ourselves in the fine rain
of the foaming water,
bathing in its moisture.
We don't need to understand the melody
or the ascending and descending notes.
Our souls are nourished by it.
