Milk Box
Ewald Brothers supplied the milk
Delivered it right to a silver insulated box
A place of honor on the steps by the back door
Mom made a list every week
Mostly 2% milk and cottage cheese pretty basic
Sometimes the kids would beg
“Can we get chocolate, Mom? Please. Chocolate milk?”
Whining pleas echoing throughout the neighborhood
Sometime she’d surprise them
“Sure,” she’d say, shrugging her suddenly agreeable shoulders. “Why not?”
“Yea!”
They’d wait impatiently for milk day and grab for the bottle when it was delivered
Mother was always quicker
“Here I’ll pour it,” she’d announce then give them each a glass
The clamoring kids would drink it down
Savoring every last drop of chocolatey goodness
It tasted like heaven
“More!” they’d beg
She’d pour again and they’d drink and drink
Until finally the bottle was empty
“That’s it,” she’d proclaim “No more until next time.”
“Awww!”
But that was okay
For those few chocolate infused milky minutes
All was right with the world.
