Eating a Poem

By M. Benjamin Thorne

Eating a Poem

Why hold that book so daintily,
like you're sitting at afternoon tea?
Are you sipping from its pages?
No! Read gluttonously—
let the syllables dribble down your chin
and smudge sibilance across your dress;
give consonance a crunch and chew,
let consonants catch in bicuspids
and molars, the better to savor their taste;
and don't eschew assonance morsels
before you show your sated grin.
