In the Cave

By Kushal Poddar

In the Cave

In the cave, the deepest one,
we lose our children.
We stand right beside them
and cannot find the soft
silk of our offsprings'. They
see us, insignificant
in front of the darker shades,
underneath the golden white
of the stalagtite,
and awash in the conical light
entering through the cave mouth.
Day has sent a search party.
I cleared my throat. The noise echoes.
When the bats begin to swirl around us
we find our children again, red and panicked.
