The MetAdverse

By Jeff Gaba

He was awakened at 7:00 a.m. by the sharp bleat of the alarm clock. He showered and dressed and poured his usual breakfast of cereal and milk. The train brought him to work where he settled in his cubicle to write code for some stock analysis app. At 5:00 p.m. he took the train back to his home.

The magenta sky slowly emerged as the sun began to settle below the horizon. The glowing coal black stars emerged and added their hue to his world. In the distance he could see his beloved, her emerald skin reflecting the colors. With a flick of her wings, she sailed towards him, and as she settled on the earth; they embraced. With their bodies pressed closely together he felt a sense of peace and serenity that added its own shades to the world. With a powerful thrust of her wings, the two were lifted and sailed together into the night.

He was awakened at 7:00 a.m. by the sharp bleat of the alarm clock. He showered and dressed and poured his usual breakfast of cereal and milk. The train brought him to work where he settled in his cubicle to write code for some note taking app. At 5:00 p.m. he took the train back to his home.

He stood on the mountaintop surrounded by lords. Shiva and Parvati recognized his power and even the loyal Hanuman bowed in awe. All could sense his role in preserving the many realms. It was his will that shaped and held the universes in balance. Stretching beyond the lords, the masses watched and waited his words. It was his words that would teach them enlightenment and bring an end to their suffering. He nodded to the lords and smiled in humble recognition of the needs of the people.

He was awakened at 7:00 a.m. by the sharp bleat of the alarm clock. He showered and dressed but skipped his usual breakfast. The train brought him to work where he settled in his cubicle to write code for some home appliance that was being unnecessarily linked to the internet of things. At 5:00 p.m. he took the train back to his home.

He raised his whip and released the crack of sound above the heads of the Minotaurs pulling his chariot. The world seemed to glow but no one could tell if the glow came from the sun overhead or the flaming wheels of his cart. Around him, other chariots lunged and attempted to overtake him. But the Minotaurs, sensing who was commanding them, pulled and flew to the finish line. The crowds cheered the hero who had vanquished all others.

He was awakened at 7:00 a.m. by the sharp bleat of the alarm clock. He showered and dressed. The train brought him to work where he settled in his cubicle to write code for some purpose he did not know. One of his co-workers came up to him and spoke, “What’s up, man. Your last update almost crashed the system. Didn’t you run a test before uploading it?” He smiled sheepishly, found and fixed the offending lines of code in the update. At 5:00 p.m. he took the train back to his home.

He walked through the crystal realms, and their geometric beauty dazzled and empowered. In the distance he saw his beloved, and as he rushed to her side he was filled with joy. There was, at that moment, no room left in him for anything other than the emotion they shared. He was complete and felt the universes he commanded begin to shift and fall away. Clinging together, the multiple realities exploded in waves of light and peace.

He did not return to work and, for several days, no one noticed. When he no longer submitted any code, someone checked at this home. They found him sitting in his gaming chair with AR glasses blocking out reality from his dead eyes. He had died in his chair emaciated from lack of food and water. Retaining some trace of rigor mortis, the fingers of his right hand still retained the mudra proclaiming a blessing on the earth. On his face, his lips were slightly parted in a beatific smile of grace.
