Old Friends

By Mitra Samal

Old Friends

Old friends,
When I meet them years later
Some of them are like old wine,
not just grown old but also grown up

Some of them so supple that they can
be easily poured into paper cups, but
still won’t lose their worth

Some of them grown into such refined
personalities that they remind me of
a fine bottle of champagne, exorbitant
for a group of teens

Some give me the impression that
they are like water, can easily blend in
Yet I know, water too comes in
various categories

Some of them are like mountain
water bottles, intriguing and
adventurous. I fancy them, but
would keep to myself around them

Some of them are akin to mineral
water bottles, utilitarian, people with
power and contacts. I will reach out
to them only when needed and perhaps,
they will too, on need basis

My favourites are those who are like
tap water. I can prepare nourishing
meals and cleanse my weary feet
in their presence

These are my soulmates, the all
weather friends. I can confide my
deepest thoughts to them
Often taken for granted, but they
are my precious
I can be myself, only with them
