Roller Skating Still Rocks

By Monique Jetton

Long ago, the roller skating rinks were the place to be, with the guys in tight short-shorts and women in tank-tops, short-shorts, and leg warmers, and no one can forget the blaring Disco music. Recently, I have been going to Roller King. I must say not much has changed. Everyone is still out to impress each other and the music of course has gotten more modern. The only difference is that every Thursday night from 8:30 to 10:30 is Adult night (21 and over). They are starting a new program from 8 to 8:30 p.m. with instructions how to roller skate. I guess I fell down too many times and so they are going to teach the proper way to skate. Now, the adults are just as bad as the kids in cutting you off, but it is a fun filled evening. The play list on any given night includes music from the 70's, 80's, some 90's, and of course country. As any place, you meet interesting people and be careful for the couples skate. Because these interesting people come and seek you out. Best bet is to go in pairs, that way if you get stuck by one of these people your friend can bail you out. So, if you get bored on Thursday nights in Modesto, try adult roller skating. Well, I'm going to rest up and get ready for this Thursday night. Hope to see you there.
