Embers

By Brian Rihlmann

Embers

we're often unaware
just how deep they lie

or how strong our faith
in their judgments remains

the words embedded
like slumbering spirits

smoldering embers
awaiting an animating breath

and when another man blows
intentionally or not

into that secret place
they will roar to life

he'll have no idea
what he's done

as he faces the inferno
with wide and baffled eyes

mirroring the flames
and your own confusion
