When Half the Football Team Was on Steroids

By Ryan Quinn Flanagan

When Half the Football Team Was on Steroids

She slides these brown plastic extensions
over the back of her glasses.
To stop them from rubbing against her ears
and breaking the skin.

I have always had perfect vision.
Even in a past life.
Some things follow you along.
Like lid-sealed tupperware leftovers.
With all that condensation over your hand
once opened up.

I have never required glasses
or any other scientific enhancement.

When half the football team was on steroids,
I was doing push ups in my parent's
unfinished basement.

Unfamiliar with nine tenths of the phonebook.
My sweat glands acting out.

Playing long ball in a physical sense.
Growing into myself as marriages failed
and everyone did nothing but grow bitter
while I never forgot my young
contagious smiling self.
