Faces I couldn't see for too long

By Ilhem Issaoui

Faces I couldn't see for too long
(a poem dedicated to S.D)

I have been running from faces all the years before
yet they chased me every time
and the faces we know
yet we can never remember
because we never took the time
the damned time
to absorb these canny features
are the ones that deserve all the remembrance
and hence, these faces run from us
like we are uncanny outré
and we are to blame
this time we are and we deserve it
we learned a long time ago how to hide
under the table
curl up inside a wardrobe
and now to feign sleeping
to not be seen
and then
to be dead?
and keep our faceless faces to ourselves
when I finally thought home is here
home was actually never here
as I lay dormant, as I regret
I know what hell feels like
hell is bitter cold
a face we cannot remember, no matter what
hell is a crowded loneliness
a memory that contrives against you
a time that betrays
a foison of faces you do not need
hell is this
