me against the world

By Linda M. Crate

me against the world

you wanted someone
to dance your cruel, strange dance
without questioning why;
someone who would let you strip her
of her armor
so you could break her in her
most vulnerable moment --
but i never gave you
the power to
destroy me,
and for that you hated me and spat in
my face;
for that you ridiculed and mocked me
wounding me
because you carried deep trauma of your own
and instead of healing it you decided like
my dad that you needed to use it against me
as a weapon --
so i rose on the wings of a dark phoenix
to burn every bridge of my past
and to burn with a light that maybe only i understand
but i have realized what i hadn't as a child;
i am worthy of all my love even if i give it to myself instead
of the partner i always thought i needed because in the end
it is me against the world.
