Food Chain

By John Grey

Food Chain

bronze-colored amphibian stares,
mouth open,
tongue like a loose whip --
thankfully,
it's as small as the frogs on earth,
on the lookout
for the local version of flies,
not curious explorers
from a faraway galaxy --
something buzzes into its range
and its zapping tongue
claims the prize --
the buzzers have their own diet,
and surely there's something out there
that we've not yet come across,
that feasts on those amphibians --
and could be there's creatures
that feed on guys and gals in space suits --
something to think about
when observing the frog-thing's
satisfied, after-dinner, smile --
