Broken Chains

By Ann Christine Tabaka

Broken Chains

I know who you are.
I cannot dispatch you to a fettered future;
therein lies a dark destiny.
Has it been two years? It doesn't seem that long!
We strayed from each other,
taking different directions.
I know who you are.
Folding you neatly in half,
I stuff you back into my pocket.
Shredded evidence of a life gone wrong.
The pain is real; it burns through me.
Saddled with depression -- I evoke past lies,
hoping for an ounce of truth.
I know who you are.
Time turns in circles. We now have new lives.
Chains can no long bind what cannot be held.
