Sadness and Misery

By Luis Cuauhtemoc Berriozabal

Sadness and Misery

I brush the sadness
out of my teeth,
every crumb of bread
and morsel of meat.

I wash the misery
from my shirt, all
the stains of blood
caked with dirt.

I have nothing to look
forward to, except
for sadness and misery.

It is horrendous to
feel this way and I
try my best not to.

I rinse the doldrums
out of my hair,
the gray reveals
my age advancing.

I wipe the tears away
from my cheekbones
and blame the sun
if I am asked what’s wrong.
