Shooting stars – A Holocaust story

Shooting stars – A Holocaust story

Evening
It is a quiet time
with supper on the table.
papa laughs about his day
momma shares the latest gossip
then shakes her finger
making us promise not to tell.

Slowly the days changed
papa didn’t go to the store
the secrets were no more
it was through the world wanted it to rain
but it couldn’t.

The trees were in full bloom
when they came
giving each of us a star
Our badge of their distain
Later they came in trucks
taking us to the edge of town
I didn’t hear the cries or the
machine gun sound.

For three dull thuds knocked me down
They were just shooting stars
that never will be found.
LET US NEVER FORGET.
