the old man on the porch

By Ken Kakareka

the old man on the porch

i liked
the title
for a novel
but it was
too close to hemingway’s
classic
so i thought
a poem
might do.
plus,
all you
really need
to know
is that
the stillness
of a summer
day
was biting
away.
he burped up
brandy
and the
music
didn’t sound
right
to him,
so he turned
it off
and went
inside.
