After 50 Years

By Luis Cuauhtémoc Berriozábal

After 50 Years

Am I to believe after 50 years
in this country I might have to
leave and pick up French to

order my meals, to put my heart
at ease? Should I be adventurous
and take up Japanese? I keep a
list of languages I should learn,
leave nothing left to chance
because I may need to venture

forth. Should I leave a trail of
tears for someone else? How
long will it be for things to change

for the better? I am not one to lose
hope. I believe in love over hate.

I have more faith in the trees and
rain. They do not lie like men. I
place my faith in a pile of leaves.
