People Are Magpies

By Jiel Narvekar

People are Magpies

A magnetic field
pulls beautiful things –
faces, bodies, apartments, cars.
Deemed beautiful, made instantly covetable.

If we covet, we must love;
and so the person or object
becomes worthy of love.

Are we then not magpies,
collecting shiny, bright objects and people,
living complex lives, solving problems we create,
building parliaments of our own making?

People are magpies.
Love is a shiny disco ball –
spinning light, reflecting,
a glittering dance of longing and illusion.
