Humanity: Back to the Beginning

By Terry Petersen

Humanity: Back to the Beginning

Calling bigotry an opinion is like calling arsenic a flavor. (Jack Cameron)

Adam, I have no idea how tall you were,
if your hair hung to your shoulders,
or stopped closer to your ears.
I don’t know if your name was Adam,
Quincy, or Whatchamacallit,
how long you lived, the size of your rib,
or the rich story that introduced your essential partner.
I don’t take an ancient story as stone-hard fact.
You tell a tale about beginnings. That’s all that matters.
And reach unspoken lines into fantasy thought
that focuses on beginnings, the human quest for answers.
Why does it matter what color my skin is, your skin was,
or the light versus dark shade of the families in any neighborhood?
If you didn’t exist, Adam, neither would anyone else.
You, whoever you or your group were, started something huge.
My family thanks you. The world needs something more now.
Although I can’t impose a rule of kindness
on all of creation. It’s a worthwhile suggestion.
Peace upon all humanity.
