Palindrome

By Arshi Mortuza

Palindrome

I lack the language, but I know
if it were a word,
it would be a palindrome.

A mirror, but with no depth —
one with smudges, thumbprints.

The most basic palindrome.
No wow factor.
Yet on my radar —
and I try to keep it civic,
keep a level head.

Palindrome —
a name that carries more weight
than it holds.
Much like you.

See how they haven’t created
palindromic words that fascinate?
That’s because they haven’t met you.

And I know this because
I keep rescanning our interactions,
and it’s always the same —
forwards and backwards.

A predictable labyrinth
of lexical loss.
