Bite

By DS Maolalaí

Bite

the words, like a bird
in my teeth. I say it
so carefully: love you
each morning. you snooze
but acknowledge
and crush down your eider-
down duvet. love you:
yes: you say it back –
sleepily, and I think
far too easily,
as if you weren't worried
like I am
that something
once bitten
might bleed.
