Spring Thaw

By Sand Pilarski

The world began to thaw when I was twenty-one
I thought that I was full-formed
and filled with heat
and ready for some fun.

A young doe in the forest in the season's change
saw the shadows change to wolves
all filled with heat
and ready for some fun.

Youth gave me speed to dodge and flee my predators
though I still faced them, longing
all filled with heat
and ready for some fun.

And now there's you, standing, horns aloft, watching me
drink in the sun and glowing,
all filled with heat
and ready for some fun.

Over the years we'll gaze into each other's eyes
seeing ice, and thaw, and spring,
all filled with heat
and ready for some fun.
