The Idle Boat

"...it seemed I had been on this boat for years..."

The Idle Boat

I had a dream that I was in an idle boat.
It had no rudder or oars and it went in no direction.
I was far in the ocean
And it seemed I had been on this boat for years,
Just bobbing in the ocean without a rudder or oars.

In this dream I had just awakened in a frenzy,
Getting on my belly and paddling the water with my hands.
The boat went in slow circles as my hands fanned drops of ocean.
Finally I stopped and fell on my back,
Closing my eyes from the expostulation of the sun,

Waking up to another day in this bed
With the sun streaming in,
The cuffs on the sleeves of my shirt damp with salt water.
