Hollywood's Last Cowboy

Christopher Fried lives in Richmond, VA and works as an ocean shipping logistics analyst.

Hollywood’s Last Cowboy

Sincerity was always negligible,
with the past golden years of Tinseltown
praised being no exception. There were clowns
drunk on group faddish thought and rigmarole
concerning some cause said in evening gowns.

Banality as fashion has grown worse.
   Cliched reiterating: “Never meet
your heroes,” or you’ll soon perceive deceit
beneath the winning smiles, and what’s perverse
revealed on the web as their agents tweet.

But he avoided the childhood pitfalls
   encasing even those beholden to
the Mouse, and those remaining sane are few
among new Hollywood. Career baseball
to Elvis, then to his Escape breakthrough.

Decades have passed, and physically he’s changed
from action star to a supporting player,
but navigating the news, no naysayers
have spoken lasting words as charm has ranged
across all kinds, disclosing fandom’s layers.
