Someone To Complain To

"...a sign of a midlife crisis..."

Someone To Complain To

They say writing about first love
could be a sign of a midlife crisis,
leading to the old new car blues,
even if one just wants to misremember
a kiss being better than it was,

only to accept it still tasted like spit
instead of a sunset on a beach

because cracked lips would rather
have someone to complain to
behind windows shut tightly
against another winter night,
knowing such words can’t be jilted,
regardless how hard we smile.
