Baseball Bat
Tall and skinny
Davey wasn’t all that coordinated
But he was a good guy and happy to try anything
“Watch this,” he said one warm summer morning
He tapped the ground with his new bat
A thirty-two-ounce Louisville Slugger
The sun shone brightly as his friend watched and waited
Davey readied himself took a giant step and then swung for the fences
Oh, oh.
The friend couldn’t duck fast enough
THUNK the bat collided with his skull
A homerun to the temple
Dropping him like a stone.
Later Davey’s face peered closely
“Hey buddy, are you okay?”
“Yeah,” the friend said blinking away the stars. “I am.”
“Good,” Davey smiled relieved. “I’m glad.”
The friend rubbed his head and grinned
“Nice swing by the way.”
“Thanks.”
Davy helped him to his feet and handed him the bat
“Okay now it’s your turn.”
“Thanks,” his friend said then added “Better stand aside.”
Davy grinned and moved back a step
“Good idea,” he said. “Thanks. I will.”
