Explanation to the Explorers

By John Grey

Explanation to the Explorers

If it's any consolation,
you were set upon by beasts
in the upper rungs of our food chain.
Not the kind however
to recognize the value
of good company,
pleasant conversation,
when hungry babes
fresh from the egg
are screeching for meat.

But it should please you no end
to learn that the loss
of five of your men
is compensated in a way
by how their tasty flesh
helped succor the next generation
of a species endangered
on our planet.

And if your party
dwindled by a third
means a less bountiful feast for us,
then at least we can revel
in the sight
of these rare creatures
fluttering in the background,
chirping and chirring
while we eat the succulent flesh
of the rest of you.

Yes, the more for them,
the less for us.
But, unlike you,
we can live with that.
