A Love Lost

By Patricia Reis

A Love Lost

This soul stands where
anguish has a grip
grief is a constant companion
it sits on my shoulder

My heart renders to tender,
its broken pieces
fall into my life
I am unable to mend

These eyes veiled with tears
erupt into weeping,
anytime
anywhere ~

Without complaint
I fall to my knees
say a prayer,
‘please release this darkness’

Unaware Inattentive
time has little meaning
days come,
days go

One overcast day,
a small window opens,
fresh air enters my lungs
light enters my veins

Parts of my body tingle
pieces of my heart awaken
Today, light is here
Tomorrow is possible

Today, I can talk of this loss with no tears
today, friends exist for more than support
today, I invite good food back to my table
today, the dog has a walking partner

Life keeps moving
this process of loss
snakes like a river
with deep and conflicting currents

I surrender to its winding course
