Each Year’s Jitters

When did my consciousness begin?
It began before my first voyage,
down a tunnel my mother provided.

I remember thinking that my life would include
great amounts of problems encountered.
I’d have to stay aware of the tug-of-war of
nature vs. nurture.

I think the best goal that a person of any age
can possess is to continue to improve oneself.
I’m perfectly capable of achieving my best
within this new framework.
I’ll need to get there by using
that old standard: perseverance.
In order to surmount the crucible
of discovery through ingenuity,
a lessened lag of ambition needs
to be ignored and overcome.

I can use benchmarks to judge myself.
Where was I last year?

And, I won’t be accepting a single breakdown
as I take each first baby step.
