The Little Box
Exploring the attic in the abandoned mansion
I stumbled upon a little box of wood
mother of pearl, gold, and precious stones.
Hands shaking, I found my way to the flimsy lock
containing a million hidden treasures;
inside I found a void inviting me in.
Realizing it was to be the present of a lifetime
I saw the soft padding of velvety green and red
bearing the shape of a heart, and I looked down.
It was time, and had been for very long
to make an offering to you of my heart
flesh, blood, and its soft beating.
Tomorrow, I will place a ribbon around my gift
and walk to your doorstep so I may abandon
all I can leave to you in complete surrender.
