Awesome Night
The rough, red, rice blows hot in a Texas wind.
Its beauty like the Indian corn of October.
In the plains.
It is Awesome Night, like so many Awesome Nights before.
Each one a little miracle at the least.
This one, a catharsis.
The locust takes off his old skin and screams with pleasure.
Freshening dew wets her lips,
Not just moist but soaking wet and beautiful glimmering.
“That is how it should be,” she says.
And the million ways it shouldn't be crumble to ashes.
Blown across the rolling hills scattered out onto the flat plains.
Leaving only her warm sweet breath on my face.
The rough, red, rice blows hot in a Texas wind.
He lumbers on,
Layer of skin building on layer of skin,
Not lazy, just laboring under the weight of tissue.
She peels back a flap and injects her song deeply.
He doesn't feel a thing—
And then her heart blossoms like irises inside of him.
It is Awesome Night,
This one, a catharsis.
The old locust takes off his ancient skin and screams with pleasure.
She comes, he comes, they come together. Shells keep falling away.
The rough, red, rice blows hot in a Texas wind.
Its beauty like the Indian corn of October.
In the plains.
It is Awesome Night.
This is a love song.
This is a love song.
