"...lightning and thunder sounding like part of a war..."

The Puddles the Next Morning

It rained again last night
with lightning and thunder
sounding like part of a war
we pretend has no winners or losers,
and the puddles the next morning
remind me of ugly crying
after getting drunk
on your fortieth birthday,
while the grey sky was cold,
as if it was surrendering
to another lost summer.
