The Frustrated Astronaut

"...Where are the worm-holes?.."

The Frustrated Astronaut

I'm sixteen
and the moon's not enough for me.
I want to go Mars and beyond.
Out of the solar system altogether, in fact.

I tried the telescope
but that didn't cut it.
And a diet of science fiction
made me that much more hungry
for outer space.

It's all the stars' fault.
They're like sideshow barkers
beckoning me into
the wonders beyond.
But, unfortunately,
Earth's science is under-age.

So I sit here in my room
cursing everything
from gravity to the speed of light.
Where are the worm-holes?
What about the warp drives?

My father says
if I don't keep up with my studies
I'll never get a decent job.
But they may not be hiring
for the job I crave
for another thousand years.
And I am taking classes in my own frustration.
So I'm still the best
in what I cannot do.
