One Dog Then

By Wayne F. Burke

One Dog Then

two
then three
in the bark of
early morning,
then the roosters
the roofers
next door
their radio turned up
loud
then cars
going-by and
multiplying;
the alien voice
of the radio
speaks to the neighborhood
but not to me
sitting in a doorway
on the 2nd floor
across the way,
warm sun on
my cold flesh.
