Making Headway

I deal with my trauma the same way
I deal with passing an automobile accident
on the opposite side of the highway

I try not to look into the rearview mirror
but my eyes always tend to shift
and glance back at the damage

until my grip on the steering wheel
interrupts to remind me
about the road that's still ahead

and that I've got to keep going
I've got to keep moving forward
because I don't have a goddamn choice.
