Night Jog

Cord Moreski is a poet from New Jersey.

Night Jog

After another breakdown,
Jill decided to jog at night.
She bought expensive shoes,
a pair of tribal print leggings,
and the latest smartwatch
that kept track of her life.
And as she trotted for hours
along a muddy path in the woodland
near her apartment, she refused
to call it quits until somebody
ran past her on the same trail.
Then when it finally happened,
she accelerated for one last time,
closed her eyes and imagined
for just that moment
as the person bolted by her
that they, too, were running away
from something in the dark.
