For the Kids

"...We each worked an extra under the table job..."

For the Kids

We looked for
a "good" school

"Good" schools are,
by definition, ninety
percent or more white
and are found in
white-washed,
thug-free, upscale,
neighborhoods

"It's for the kids."
I told my spouse
"For the kids."
She agreed

We bleached
our speech,
manners,
bone dry,
flat white

We each
worked
an extra
under the
table job
for the
kids

We hate
where
we live
who we
are what
we did

The kids
hate us

We don't
blame them
if they
wedge a
blunt butcher
knife between
our ribs
while we
sleep

We will
sing fare
well and
goodbye
free, free
god almighty
free at last
to find
our own
"good"
spot
