Intruder

"...the meaning's no more clear than the creaking of a floorboard..."

Intruder

There's reason
in the reasonless.
purpose
to the rustling of a curtain,
even if the meaning's
no more clear
than the creaking of a floorboard.
Maybe it's threat.
Or an instruction.

Then silence.
You never quite made out
what the house
was trying to tell you.
Is there an intruder?
Are you the intruder?
Your heart beats harder.
In fear?
In anticipation?
If you only knew
what it was.
If you only knew
who was feeling it.
