Step Back, Hated Rapists

Dr. Ketaki Datta is an Associate Professor of English with Bidhannagar Govt. College, Kolkata.

Step Back, Hated Rapists!

I am the wisp of a girl
From Balrampore,
I am the girl of Vadohi,
I am the raped dalit
of Hathras,
I am illegally burnt
By cops!
I am the woman from
Rajasthan,
From Madhyapradesh,
I am your sister,
Your mother,
Your wife,
Your brother's wife,
I am Woman!
Male gaze is what
I fear,
The gaze would strip me off,
My clothes tear!
I know you have your sister,
Your mother back home,
Why outrage the chastity
Of a poor girl, near her home?
Why consign her to flames
To the utter dismay
Of her near ones, whose claims
Fall on deaf ears!

I am your sister,
I am your mother,
Why look at me
With lust in your eyes,
With greed in your talons?

I am coerced to leave this earth
But I must chop your hands off,
Burn your lust for flesh,
I am coming back
With formidable umbrage,
With redoubtable courage!
