My Once Upon a Time

Poem.

Overdosing on romance
Consumed in being in love
But it never lasts
Strung out on fights
Arguments, thrown objects
Derisive words sharp
Barbs tearing into my skin
Grateful for this tough hide
Skin that protects all inside
All that is vulnerable
Everything you attempt to destroy
So far from where we started
From what I thought had begun
As I turn to leave
You pounce
Trying to sink teeth into my backbone
Underestimating the steel
