I've Flown with the Birds

...I've kept mostly to myself..."

I've Flown with the Birds

I've flown with the birds
and have avoided work --
years worth.
I've worked like a dog
digging for bones.
I've never owned anything
except a car, some
clothes, and
books I have lugged place
to place;
I've kept mostly to myself;
sat in corners, valued
discretion over valor;
avoided instead of
confronted, and
stayed out of trouble
except when drunk;
paid my bills
except when broke;
took responsibility
except when I didn't ...
Tried to do right --
protect the helpless and innocent,
except when I couldn't --
mostly I've just kept
living.
