Hitchhiking on Ziba

John Grey is an Australian poet, US resident, recently published in Soundings East, Dalhousie Review and Connecticut River Review.

Hitchhiking on Ziba

This creature called Gorgus
picked me up in his hover-cruiser.
I barely understood his language
but he told me his stories anyhow,
his exploits as a rare metal scavenger,
intergalactic bounty hunter,
mercenary on both sides
in the Crosiun wars.
He rambled on
about how hard he’d had it.
Spent a month in a Zorgon jail once.
Was nearly killed in a Qarulian bar brawl.
A laser blast from a Varelian cop
just singed his fourth ear.
He whined and complained,
bragged and cursed,
for ten thousand miles or more.
Just like Ooba
who gave me a ride on Zebu.
And Ythak on Gua,
Petro on Miana IV.
If some weren’t green,
and others yellow or blue,
I’d swear they were
all the same guy.
