History

History is bound in time
but time is wrapped in records
that sleep in the day
and wake up at night
to display the changes,
the losses and doubts
that disturb our sleep
and shake our belief in
the certainty of progress.

But history itself is
deduced by beliefs
and by those with motives
and those who whisper
contradictory tales of misery
and happiness,
or love and madness.

The tales of our past
move through the air
like a rocket in space
and insert their opinions
in the slant of history.
What purpose should history serve
if not to inspire and improve?
If it cannot do either,
its purpose is lost,
and its direction, mistaken.
