Brassy Roots Fibonacci

Brandy began to play saxophone at seven years
her music maestro insisted
her perfect pitch brought
life to notes
better
than
peers
male
and
female;
Brandy’s skill
blossomed while young; she’d
form snot bubbles like helium
balloons around, petite nostrils: transparent mucus
grew, burst and blared like an alto
sax playing “Harlem
Nocturne.” She
emptied
her
high
school
spit
valve on
fields not floors
where she taught the art of
sucking cane reeds, fingering her
conical brass instrument, never missing a cue.
